Texas Trip: A Journey of Challenges, Resilience, and the Pursuit of Inclusivity

Introduction:

Our road trip to Central Texas for a wedding with my partner and close friend was initially filled with excitement and anticipation. Little did we know that this eventful journey would assess our patience and resilience as we encountered various challenges due to my visual impairment and my loyal guide dog’s presence. Join me as I recount the memorable moments of our Texas trip and reflect on the significance of inclusivity and understanding in creating a more accessible world for individuals with disabilities.

A&W Restaurant – A Rude Awakening:

Our visit to an A&W restaurant for lunch turned into an unexpected challenge. Despite my guide dog’s clear identification, the female worker at the counter completely disregarded me and refused to acknowledge my ability to order for myself. Feeling dismissed and disheartened, I decided to confront her about her behavior. This uncomfortable encounter served as a stark reminder of the misconceptions and lack of awareness surrounding service animals and their vital role in assisting individuals with disabilities.

While waiting in line to place our orders, one of the cashiers approached us and informed my friend that dogs were not allowed inside. I quickly responded, explaining that my dog was a service animal and that I had a visual impairment. However, she ignored my explanation and returned to the cashier area without acknowledging me.

When it was finally our turn to place orders, the same cashier took both of my friends’ orders but proceeded to ask them what I wanted to order. I stepped forward once again and firmly asserted that I was perfectly capable of placing my own order. She reluctantly took my order and processed it, but not a single word was exchanged between us.

As we sat down to wait for our food, I noticed that the same rude cashier was serving us. She placed my friends’ meals in front of them without any issues, but when she approached me with my tray, she hesitated and tried to hand it to my friend as if assuming they should assist me. I immediately clarified that the food was indeed mine and reached out to receive the tray myself. An uncomfortable tension hung in the air as she reluctantly placed my tray across from my seat and turned to walk away.

Determined to understand her behavior, I stopped her before she could leave and asked why she was treating me with such disrespect. In response, she mumbled something about the dog, refusing to give a clear answer, and walked away. Frustrated, my friends and I decided to let the issue go for the time being and try to enjoy our lunch break.

As we prepared to leave, my friends went to use the bathroom, giving me a moment to address the situation with someone else. I approached a different employee and asked if there was a manager on duty. The employee informed me that there was only a shift manager and pointed to the rude cashier. Realizing that I might not get a fair resolution from the same person who had treated me poorly, I requested the corporate contact information before leaving the building.

Motel – A Fight for Accommodation:

As we arrived at the motel for our weekend event, we were hopeful for a pleasant stay. However, our excitement quickly turned to concern when the hotel clerk noticed my guide dog and informed me about their “no pets” policy. Determined to assert my rights as a person with a disability, I took the opportunity to educate the clerk about the ADA laws that protect individuals like me, allowing service animals to accompany us without any extra charges or restrictions.

With confidence, I explained to the young lady behind the counter that my dog was not a pet but a trained service animal, assisting me with my disability. I pointed out that my reservation clearly stated the presence of a service dog, which should allow us to stay without any complications.

The clerk seemed taken aback by my knowledge of the law and hesitated for a moment. She then checked my reservation and reluctantly agreed to let us stay but insisted on charging me both a pet fee and a cleaning fee. Calmly, I reiterated that such charges were not permissible under federal law and that service animals were exempt from any additional fees or deposits.

Recognizing that she might not be fully aware of the legal requirements, I shared some key information about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its provisions regarding service animals. I emphasized the importance of businesses being well-informed about these crucial laws to ensure they treat all guests with fairness and respect.

Although the clerk accepted my explanation and allowed us to stay without the extra charges, she mentioned that the manager, who worked the night shift, might want to contact me for further clarification.

Despite not hearing from the manager during our stay, we had a successful and enjoyable time at the motel. The incident highlighted the importance of advocating for our rights and the need for businesses to be educated about the ADA laws. Every individual, regardless of their disability, deserves equal treatment and access to accommodation without facing unnecessary hurdles or fees.

As we checked out at the end of our stay, I hoped that the information I shared had made a positive impact, not only on myself but for any future guests with service animals. By standing up for our rights, we can create a more inclusive and understanding environment for everyone.

Country Church – An Unexpected Ally:

As we gathered at the country church to prepare for the upcoming wedding, a slight uncertainty loomed over us concerning my guide dog’s presence inside the Chapel. Little did we know that an unexpected ally would come to our aid in the form of the man in charge – who turned out to be the pastor himself. This heartwarming experience not only dissolved our concerns but also highlighted the power of open communication and the willingness to embrace inclusivity, even in the most unexpected places.

On the evening before the wedding, the wedding party assembled at the venue to set up and decorate the hall for the upcoming reception. Since it was a private event among friends and the central air conditioning was off, I decided to give my guide dog some well-deserved rest and took off his harness. After spending the last couple of days in the car, he needed some free time to relax.

As we were busy with preparations, an older man arrived with the keys to open the chapel for us to begin decorating. He wore dirty work boots, filthy overalls, and a grey t-shirt, giving the impression of a rugged, no-nonsense individual. As we followed him towards the chapel doors, he hesitated for a moment before turning to me with a concerned expression. He expressed that while it was fine for my dog to be in the hall, he felt uneasy about having him inside the chapel.

In response, I calmly explained that my dog was a service animal, though not in uniform at that moment. I assured him that my guide dog would be accompanying me during the wedding and that there would not be any issues. Taking a moment to consider my explanation, he nodded thoughtfully and then surprised me with his understanding response. He expressed that he saw no problem with my service dog attending the wedding and agreed to allow him inside the chapel.

The next day, as we waited outside the chapel before the wedding ceremony, a well-dressed man approached our group and struck up a conversation with some of my friends. The father of the bride introduced him to everyone, and I was astonished to learn that the sharply dressed man was, in fact, the same person I had met the night before – the pastor of the church.

During the wedding ceremony, my guide dog proved to be a model of good behavior, which the pastor noticed as well. After the ceremony, I overheard the pastor enthusiastically bragging to some members of the congregation about my service dog’s impeccable behavior. He seemed genuinely amazed at the role service animals play and the invaluable assistance they provide to individuals with disabilities.

The experience at the country church left us all with a profound sense of gratitude and respect for the pastor’s open-mindedness and willingness to embrace inclusivity. It served as a reminder that understanding and communication can break down barriers and foster acceptance, even in unexpected encounters. This heartening encounter made the wedding day even more special, as we celebrated not only love and friendship but also the power of empathy and compassion in making the world a more inclusive place.

The Parking Lot Incident – A Lesson in Unity:

As we exited the restaurant, I was met with an unexpected and unpleasant encounter. A woman began objecting loudly to the presence of my guide dog, despite my attempts to explain the legality and necessity of his presence. Her comments grew increasingly rude and offensive, leaving me feeling hurt and frustrated.

I tried my best to calmly explain that I had a disability and relied on my guide dog for assistance, but she seemed unwilling to understand or empathize. Instead, she continued to hurl insults and threats, creating an uncomfortable and tense situation.

Deciding it was best to avoid further confrontation, I walked to the grass area nearby to let my service dog relieve himself. Even from a distance, the woman continued her verbal assault, displaying a complete lack of compassion and respect.

However, my despair was short-lived as I suddenly heard the reassuring voices of my family and friends emerging from the restaurant. They had finished their meal and were now joining me outside. Sensing the tension, they quickly realized what was happening and immediately came to my defense.

Without hesitation, my family and friends stood together, forming a united front against the ignorance and discrimination displayed by the woman and her two companions who had arrived to back her up.

As my family and friends approached, the expressions on the faces of the three bullies changed from arrogance to surprise and uncertainty. They had not anticipated such a strong and supportive group gathering around me.

It is essential to note that a considerable number of my friends were bikers, dressed in their leather jackets, adorned with tattoos, and exuding a powerful presence. In the face of this united and formidable group, the three troublemakers reconsidered their actions.

A brief but tense exchange ensued, with my family and friends calmly but firmly asserting my rights as an individual with a disability and emphasizing the importance of treating all individuals with respect and empathy.

In the end, the three individuals decided not to escalate the situation further and instead retreated into the restaurant, no longer uttering a single sound.

The incident in the parking lot served as a profound lesson in the strength that comes from unity and standing up against ignorance and discrimination. I felt incredibly grateful for the support of my family and friends, who not only protected me but also used the opportunity to educate misguided individuals about the rights of people with disabilities.

Through this incident, we reaffirmed the importance of promoting understanding, empathy, and kindness in our interactions with others. We also learned that, when faced with adversity, coming together as a united and compassionate community can make a powerful and positive impact.

A&W Customer Service – A Disappointing Resolution:

Upon returning home from the Texas trip, I decided to act and address the issues we encountered. I shared a detailed account of the entire incident, hoping that they would understand the importance of addressing the mistreatment of customers with disabilities and ensuring accessibility in their establishments.

A week later, I received a response from the corporate office, offering their apologies and assuring me that they would address the situation. As a gesture of goodwill, they offered me a $100 gift card to any of their locations. However, I had to decline the offer, as there were no A&W locations within a reasonable distance from my home, making the gift card impractical for me.

The corporate office then proposed an alternative offer – a pair of limited-edition collector-grade Root Beer mugs. I saw this as an opportunity to have a unique addition to our home bar area and gladly accepted their offer.

Unfortunately, my excitement turned into disappointment when I received the package from the corporate office. Upon opening it, I found the two mugs they sent were factory defective. The glass appeared murky and poorly cast, and the A&W logo was crooked, and one mug even had a sharp edge, making them unusable and not up to the expected standard.

I made multiple attempts to contact the corporate office to discuss the issue and find a suitable resolution. However, my efforts were met with unresponsive emails, stating that they considered the issues resolved and closed the case.

This experience left me disheartened and frustrated. The thoughtlessness in sending factory-defective mugs to a visually impaired customer added insult to injury. It reinforced the need for businesses to prioritize accessibility and treat all customers, including those with disabilities, with dignity and respect.

While I appreciate the initial willingness of the corporate office to address the situation, the disappointing resolution underscored the ongoing need for businesses to take customer complaints seriously and implement more effective measures to ensure a positive and inclusive experience for all patrons.

As a customer with a disability, I hope that companies like A&W will reevaluate their customer service practices and strive to improve their responsiveness and understanding of the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. Every customer deserves to be treated with care and consideration, regardless of their abilities or limitations.

Conclusion:

Our Texas trip was a rollercoaster of emotions, evaluating our patience and resilience as we faced challenges stemming from my visual impairment and my guide dog’s presence. However, each obstacle served as an opportunity to raise awareness, educate others, and promote inclusivity. Through open communication, understanding, and the support of loved ones, we navigated the difficulties, ensuring that I, as a visually impaired individual, could participate fully in all aspects of life, including cherished moments like a wedding.

This journey reinforced the importance of advocating for disability rights, raising awareness about service animals, and creating a world that is more accommodating and understanding for all individuals. Let us use our experiences and voices to build a society where inclusivity is not just a buzzword but a reality, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can lead fulfilling and empowered lives. As we continue to share our stories, let them serve as a catalyst for positive change, making the world a better place for people of all abilities.
